File Count vs Download Size: What Matters?

File count and download size describe different parts of an archive. Here is how to use both numbers when comparing packs.

Quick answer

Download size tells you how much data you must store and transfer. File count tells you how many individual items make up that data. Neither is inherently better; the useful comparison is how the two numbers relate to each other.

A small number of very large files

A pack with 40 files totaling 80 GB is likely dominated by large media files. It may copy efficiently, but each individual file can take significant time to transfer or open.

A very large number of smaller files

A pack with 20,000 files totaling the same 80 GB has a completely different shape. Browsing, indexing, extracting, and copying can take longer because the operating system must process thousands of individual entries.

Use the ratio as context

You do not need to calculate an exact average file size every time, but the ratio provides useful context. Large total size plus low file count suggests large files. Large total size plus high file count suggests breadth.

A trustworthy listing should expose both numbers whenever the source metadata makes them available.
